Caroline Elementary School PTA to Host Farm to Table Market on September 17

Press release from Caroline Elementary School PTA:

Ithaca, NY—The Farm to Table movement focuses on producing food locally and delivering that food to local consumers. On Sunday, September 17, 10:00am-3:00pm the Caroline Elementary School PTA will host the 4th annual Farm to Table Market at the Caroline Elementary School, 2439 Slaterville Rd/Route 79 W. The event is free and open to the public.

“When children learn where their food comes from and can take ownership of one process of growing that food, whether it’s growing it themselves in the garden or eating a meal with vegetables grown at their school, we empower our children to start trying new, more nutritious foods and to eat a healthier diet.” Sara Barker, Owner, RavenWood Farm.

Farmer market tables selling locally sourced and grown goods – produce, honey, eggs, meat, wool, fiber, homemade crafts, and more – from students, farmers, community members. Participants include Caroline School Garden, Dewitt Middle School Garden, Gil’s Honeybees, Nook and Cranny Farm, RC’s Plants and Produce, RavenWood Farm, Scotta Be Good, Shelterbelt Farm, TC3 Farm and more local farms and family gardeners.

Educators will be present to help us learn about bringing food from farms to our tables. Participants include NY Coalition for Healthy School Food – ICSD Cool School Food Program, Woods Earth and Fresh Snack Program, Ithaca Children’s Garden, TC Cooperative Ext Compost, Horticulture, and Agriculture, TC3 Farm to Bistro, USDA, Youth Farm Project, and more.

Cuisine with locally sourced and grown ingredients will be offered for sale.

Sarah Gotowka, a local artist, will be offering a fun and free workshop to Farm to Table participants. Focusing on local flora found on the school grounds, she will lead us through identifying and harvesting color-making plants, then demonstrate methods for “printing” the plant matter onto fabric.

A silent auction for a chance to win a Spirit CB900 cycling bike, raffle with local prizes, and 50/50 will be held – Advantage Sport & Fitness, Coltivare, Cooper Horse Coffee, Core Life Eatery, Full Plate Collective, Greenstar, Home Depot, Ihnken Creations, Ithaca Family Chiropractic, Just a Taste, Klein’s Archery, Mimby, Lowes, Moosewood, Piggery, Rasa Spa, Scotta Be Good, State Theatre, Wegmans, YMCA, and more.

All proceeds will support the efforts of the Caroline School Garden Curriculum, Caroline School’s Healthy Food Initiative, and Caroline PTA.  For more information about this exciting event, please contact event organizer Sara Barker – (607) 342-1359,
