High Point Farms for Sale: Are we losing farmland?

High Point Farms for Sale: Are we losing farmland?

This report is a collaboration between WRFI Community Radio and Hot Potato Press:

When I saw that the High Point Farms property on Route 96 near Trumansburg was for sale, a lot of thoughts flew through my head. For one thing, I had been a customer — they were one of the first small farms I got to know when I moved back to the area in 2008, and it kind of pained me to hear of a farm I knew going out of business. And I also wondered, how many local farms are going out of business? And is there a chance this land could go to development? Is this one farm sale just the tip of the iceberg of a bigger trend, or is it just an isolated example?

Now, these are pretty complicated questions, and the answers depend on exactly where you’re talking about, and who you’re talking to, and what scale we’re talking about. So, I started with the owners, Bob and Tina MacCheyne, to find out what was going on for them. I also spoke with local ag expert Monika Roth at the Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension office and also Brett Chedzoy from the Schuyler County CCE.

According to Monika Roth, the real issue locally is not farmland being converted to development, but instead, the rising cost of farmland, which is being driven up by the expanding dairy industry.

  1. Wow, the price of land is an eye-opening issue that affects our food system’s resilience and shift towards sustainability and fairness for all. If we can’t provide land security for our local farmers, the food system will be in trouble. This sounds like a land policy issue – to address the price of farmland.

Thank you Alison for researching and articulating this incredibly pivotal issue! Also for connecting the article to WRFI’s interview – very informative.

    1. Update from the MacCheynes:

It’s an End of an Era!

It is with mix emotions Bob and Tina have made the life altering decision to sell and retire from farming. We have found a buyer, who will not be raising cattle, and the sale will be happening soon.
We would like to thank you for being wonderful customers throughout the years. We couldn’t have had a successful farm without your support.

Due to all the preparations for moving our Farm Store will no longer be open. Our Grass-fed Beef will still be available at T-burg Shur Save throughout most of the summer.

We do have several feeder cattle left to finish off. Those beeves will be sent to a rental pasture. Therefore, we will have ¼’s of beef available periodically thru the fall. Anyone interest in a ¼ beef please contact Tina to reserve NOW. Pricing and cutting information can still be found on our website.

If you are a Farmer on any level or know someone who is, will be having a HUGE Farm equipment and household sale on July 13 and 14th 8-4pm.

Check out our Craigslist post for SOME of the items available.
