This report is a collaboration between WRFI Community Radio and Hot Potato Press:
When I saw that the High Point Farms property on Route 96 near Trumansburg was for sale, a lot of thoughts flew through my head. For one thing, I had been a customer — they were one of the first small farms I got to know when I moved back to the area in 2008, and it kind of pained me to hear of a farm I knew going out of business. And I also wondered, how many local farms are going out of business? And is there a chance this land could go to development? Is this one farm sale just the tip of the iceberg of a bigger trend, or is it just an isolated example?
Now, these are pretty complicated questions, and the answers depend on exactly where you’re talking about, and who you’re talking to, and what scale we’re talking about. So, I started with the owners, Bob and Tina MacCheyne, to find out what was going on for them. I also spoke with local ag expert Monika Roth at the Tompkins County Cornell Cooperative Extension office and also Brett Chedzoy from the Schuyler County CCE.
According to Monika Roth, the real issue locally is not farmland being converted to development, but instead, the rising cost of farmland, which is being driven up by the expanding dairy industry.
