A reader wrote to ask if there’s a list of up-pick farms that are organic in our area.
The links to u-pick farms on the CCE-Tompkins website have some descriptions about the farms, including which ones are certified organic. The tricky thing to suss out, in my opinion, is that there is a wide-range of practices used by farms that are not certified. Some might use conventional pesticides, but only when problems arise. Others might use chemicals with abandon.
Asking farmers about their practices offers a chance to learn about why and how farmers do what they do. Have you tried this? What have you learned?
